A Travel Guide: A Weekend In Edinburgh

Last weekend, Edinburgh gained the coveted crown of my new favourite city. First it was London, then New York, then Seville, now Edinburgh (actually, it just seems to go in order of places I’ve visited, but never mind). I was there from Friday to Tuesday morning, staying with my godparents and getting my first experience of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. I figured I’d give you a quick rundown of the shows I saw, for anyone who’s wondering what to see or is just interested, plus more general things we did and my overall impressions of Edinburgh!

(For those who don’t know what the Fringe is – one of my friends asked why I had to go all the way to Scotland to get a fringe when I told him where I was going – the Fringe is an arts and comedy festival that takes place throughout the whole of August)

Before I go into a bit more detail about what I actually did in Edinburgh, I have to say that the Fringe is overwhelmingly amazing. There’s so many incredible shows, both free and paid, plus all the street performers on the Royal Mile, it’s hard to know where to start. The approach we took, which worked pretty well, was to book a couple of shows in advance, see some free Fringe stuff that we got given leaflets for and also go to a paid show that we got a flyer for that turned out to be absolutely brilliant. Also, quick side note – so many bloggers seemed to be there according to Instagram? I don’t know if I was just more aware of it because I was there but every other Insta story and tweet was either someone saying they were there or asking for recommendations because they were going soon!

Anyway, onto the actual shows – on Saturday night we saw Nina Conti, a ventriloquist whose primary puppet is a monkey. She also got the audience involved by picking people out and basically doing ventriloquism on them with varying accents – hard to describe but very funny! My godfather and I then went to see Circolombia at the Circus Hub, who were absolutely incredible. They’re a circus group, all from Colombia (hence the name) who combine all sorts of incredible circus acts, often involving aerial stuff, with music and dance. They were unexpectedly brilliant (although mildly terrifying to watch at points) and got a fully deserved standing ovation at the end.

On Sunday we went for a more spontaneous approach, watching a few street performers on the Royal Mile before watching a student comedy sketch show as part of the Free Fringe. As my godfather said, it was a proper ‘Fringe experience‘, in an upstairs room of a bar that sold incredibly strong cocktails (beating Seville to become the strongest mojito I’ve ever had), covered in graffiti and with a slightly odd odour. The show itself was a bit mixed, but it was a really fun experience and I now feel like I’ve properly done the Fringe. We then went to another student show, this time paid, that we got a flyer for earlier in the day. It was an ‘improv musical’, where the audience pick the characters, location and title, and help provide plot suggestions halfway through. Ours ended up with the main characters of Tinky Winky from the Teletubbies and ‘everybody’s grandma’, set in a toilet block, with the title of ‘Tink in the Stink’. It was absolutely hilarious, and ended with Tinky Winky and his grandma (?!) falling in love.

We then moved onto my final show of the Fringe, which was a performance by Exeter University acapella group Semi-Toned, who I then interviewed for local radio (spot the budding journalist!). They were a bit different to most acapella groups in that they interwove the songs with some comedy bits (and some admittedly dodgy acting), which helped to make it feel a bit more like a Fringe show than just a concert.

The next day we went back into central Edinburgh, though not for the Fringe – we first had lunch at the Boozy Cow (highly recommend – the burgers are amazing and you get kitchen roll and a tray instead of plates and cutlery), before a trip to a chihuahua café!!! There were eight chihuahuas in total, and they were all adorably cuddly, especially when it was time to feed them! There was also some decent watermelon cake too, which is always a bonus…

We then walked back to Waverley Station through Princes Street Gardens, which were beautiful and had a really nice, buzzy atmosphere. I was obviously visiting during the best time, being the height of summer and full of the excitement of the festival, but the whole city had such a nice atmosphere of excitement the whole weekend, even when the weather was cloudy and damp (which, being Scotland, it was quite a lot of the time). Another thing I’d mention as worth a brief visit is the Scotsman Steps – they link the Old and New parts of Edinburgh, and each step is made of a different marble, so they look pretty impressive (although they’re pretty lethal during wet weather!).

Have you visited Edinburgh lately? What are your recommendations? Let me know in the comments or on Twitter!

I’m Going To New York!

As I hinted at in this post, I’m going to New York next January! Like, actual New York City! With Manhattan and the Empire State Building and stuff like that! Eeek!!!

I’m going for six days with my college on a media trip that I managed to get a place on and I am insanely excited, especially as two of my college friends are also going. I think we’re staying in Manhattan and going to some film museum place, having a tour of TV/film locations, visiting the Empire State Building, 9/11 Ground Zero and the Statue of Liberty as well as having a tour of the NBC studios AND maybe seeing Aladdin on Broadway and watching Good Morning America filmed live. HOW AWESOME IS THAT I’M DYING OF EXCITEMENT ALREADY. Oh yeah and you might remember I’ve made a NYC bucket list before? I’m going to modify that and tick off as many as I can!

And as if my 2017 travel plans couldn’t get any better…I’m going on a tour of France and Switzerland with my jazz orchestra – we’ve been invited to play at both the Vienne Jazz Festival, who are also giving us tickets to the main stage in a Roman amphitheatre (!) and then the Montreux Jazz Festival, which will be my second time playing there and I am so, so, SO excited.

Have you been to any of these places? Any recommendations of things to do? Have you got any travel plans for 2017 or the rest of 2016?

The Start Of Summer: Radio 1 Big Weekend

Wahey, wahoo, callooh, callay (sneaky Rainbow Rowell reference totally intended), I’m back and alive and blogging again, yay. (I didn’t die or anything, just, y’know, GCSEs…although my social life has improved dramatically during exams, which I’m pretty sure isn’t meant to happen).

IMG_4707

But back to the point – about two weeks ago, in fact right before I wrote my last post, I went to a day of the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend at Powderham Castle, in my lovely sunnyish home county of Devon. Yay. And now I’ve finally got round to writing about it…

IMG_4720

I technically went with two of my friends, though by the end of the day we’d picked up four more and kinda temporarily met a bunch of others – because it was such a local festival, it felt like half the people I’d ever met were there, which was quite nice.  Anyway, we went on the Sunday, and after arriving, getting food because we’re teenagers and permanently hungry and meeting up with the others, we headed to the main stage, we watched One Republic, who were actually a lot better than expected…as they were the openers for some reason I didn’t think they’d be that great, but they actually completely surpassed my expectations.

IMG_4722

After OneRepublic more food was bought because some people didn’t get round to having breakfast and why not, and then we met up with five or six more friends to watch Kygo at the main stage while a couple of people went to see Panic! At The Disco on the In New Music We Trust stage. Kygo was just as good as I’d hoped (though not quite as good as when I saw him on his Cloud Nine tour in London) and there was a suitable amount of confetti…we all just stood in a line a bit off to the side of the stage and danced for the whole set, so yeah, that was a laugh.

IMG_4735

After Kygo, the group shrunk back to being five of us and we went to the INMWT tent to watch Jack Garratt, though we only managed the first fifteen or twenty minutes of his set because, well, the tent was hot and full and we all got a bit too sweaty, to put it bluntly, so we moved outside and sat in the shade for a half hour or so until Alessia Cara was due on (/we got sick of the Star Wars theme tune being played every time the ride next to us started). I think it was also here that we saw some people dressed as hot dogs/ice cream cones and a guy in short shorts and electric blue tights who made one of my friends get up and do the “hashtag dance” (FOR THE LOVE OF THE HASHTAG) so, uh, yeah.

Alessia Cara was one of the artists I’d most been looking forward to (I think I might know all of the lyrics to the deluxe version of her Know-It-All album off by heart…) and she definitely lived up to my expectations. I just really love her music and how relatable her lyrics are and she seemed so down-to-earth when she was talking between songs, which was really nice (plus we were nearer the front but at the side, so there was less of a heat problem). I think my favourite songs of hers, from what I can remember, may have been Here, Scars To Your Beautiful or River of Tears (I swear part of the chord sequence of the latter is the same as some other really famous song, Snow Patrol or something, but I can’t quite figure it out and it’s seriously bugging me so if anyone can figure it out please feel free to put me out of my misery). Oh, and we briefly met about five more friends there so yeah, that was nice.

IMG_4772

oh, and her hair and style and everything is just so great and I want it

After Alessia Cara we headed back to the main stage to watch Iggy Azalea who was, well, rubbish. You could tell because the camera never panned to the audience after the first five minutes because pretty much everyone was just stood there like is this over yet but hey, I got a decent photo of the stage so I’ll stick that in here anyway and we’ll just forget she ever actually performed.

IMG_4790

About halfway through Iggy four of us decided we’d had enough and headed back over to the INMWT stage (via the churros van because ahem who says no to churros and Belgian chocolate sauce? NOT ME, THAT’S FOR SURE) to meet back up with a friend we’d seen earlier and watch the first bit of Skepta’s set before heading back to the main stage for The 1975. In the end we only caught about two minutes of Skepta before we left so the friend we’d met up with, a diehard The 1975 fan, could get back to the main stage and as close to the front as possible for the start of their set which, incidentally, was quite good.

IMG_4791

Oh, by this point I think we’d also decided to invest in getting our faces PVA’d and glittered because hey, what better to spend £5 on? (it did look pretty damn awesome and the PVA smelled weirdly good (I’M NOT A GLUE SNIFFER PROMISE) and it came off surprisingly easily so yeah, it was worth it, even when it felt like half my face was covered in some weird face mask thing). Anyway, after The 1975 we met back up with the two friends we’d ditched for Skepta and got some lovely, slightly undercooked pizza and chips for dinner. Yum. We then just chilled in the sun whilst Ellie Goulding was on with even more people we knew that we found along the way, before heading back to the main stage for the end of The (very sweary) Weeknd’s set and to await Coldplay (YAY!).

For some reason I wasn’t actually that excited about Coldplay (I think Alessia Cara, Kygo and Jack Garratt were the people I was most keen to see) but, as pretty much goes without saying, they were phenomenal. They really upped the confetti game with rainbow confetti, and fireworks, and it turns out that when 25,000 people get out their phone torches at the same time it looks pretty incredible, as proven during The Scientist (oh boy, you know you’re hormonal when you nearly start crying watching that back…please help me, for my own sanity). Oh, and if you watched it on TV and saw an inflatable shark right near the start, I one or two people in front of that :). (and is it just me that thinks one of the Coldplay guitarists looks really like Andy Murray?!)

So yeah, I guess you could say it was a good day and a pretty decent thing to do a few days after your birthday 🙂

Here are a just a few more snaps from the day, some courtesy of my friends…

The Good Life

I’ll warn you now: this is a soppy post, so if you can’t deal with extreme soppiness, just stop reading now. I won’t be offended, promise. The last few weeks, month or so have felt kinda weird. On the one hand, I feel permanently stressed and under pressure and like only the tiniest thing needs to happen for me to just flip out. I’ve been revising a lot and neglecting this blog a bit which makes me kinda sad and not reading as much as I’d like to which is a bit disappointing (though tbh, I’d like to read pretty much 24/7, so I’m likely to stay disappointed until at least the summer, if not forever). On the other hand, just as I’m leaving my friends I seem to be having the best times with them (the cynic in me wants to say something about that being relief at leaving them but I’m sure it wasn’t). There’s been three birthday meals with them in the last few weeks (mine and two others) and every single time its just been really fun. Today it was like 19 degrees (good effort Britain, I salute you) so we all went and sat on the Cathedral Green and it was just so lovely for some indescribable reason. (I feel like there’s something wrong with the fact that my social life seems to be at its liveliest in the middle of GCSEs…oh well)

There’s been other stuff too – we had a Eurovision party which is now definitely going to become an annual thing, I did a 5K charity run with one of my friends last weekend, we’re planning on going to a roller disco thing in a couple of weeks (because why the hell not) and saving the best to last, last Sunday I spent a day at the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend with a bunch of my best friends and it was one of the best days of my life. (seriously, I’m rewatching OneRepublic’s set now and nearly crying because I want to be back there what the hell is going on with my hormones please send help)(Ryan Tedder is the Superman of songwriting though you have to admit and his vocal range is incredible).

img_4687-1

It was just awesome, it started off as me and two friends, then we picked up a friend of a friend and two more of my friends and then throughout the day we just kept gaining and occasionally losing people. One of the highlights of the day (apart from Coldplay obvs) was watching Kygo because a) Kygo (my sister doesn’t get why like him so much it’s so annoying) and b) we met even more people from school and there was just like ten of us in a line dancing just off the to the side and it was the most fun I’ve had in ages, it just felt like there was something really special about it. (I warned you this post was soppy alright) (more on Big Weekend in another post ~coming soon~)

I have some pretty awesome friends out of school too. (This is where it gets really soppy) I have no idea how I ended up so close with somebody two years older than me, especially after only knowing her for two years, but 90% of the time she’s one of my favourite people in the whole world. She’s funny and lovely and gives me the best birthday presents and writes the best cards and gives the best motivational pep talks and is always there for me to talk to and gives me large quantities of chocolate and is generally fantastic and knows exactly who she is so if she’s reading this, thank you so much for being a wonderful person who I can always rely on and who I’m so glad to be joining at college next year but so sad that you’re going to uni soon 😦 (motivation to learn to drive quickly…)

I guess there’s not really a lot of point to this post, other than to say that I’m so happy I have such great friends that I do. I’m so happy that, at school, I’m in a group of friends that keep the bitching to a minimum and don’t tend to air any issues we have with each other publicly but are always really supportive. I’m so happy that my friends know me well enough that they get me the perfect presents – eg a legitimate TEAPOT, TEA LEAVES (separate and completely uncoordinated but brilliantly coincidental), the new Kygo album and the one of the prettiest journals I think I’ve ever seen. Oh, and a truckload of chocolate and a massive mug for all the tea that I drink. I’m so happy that I have friends that I can talk music and books and fanfiction and blogging and how-the-hell-do-you-apply-eyeliner-without-stabbing-yourself and how-beautiful-are-my-prom-shoes with and friends that just get me. I’m generally really, really happy that I have the friends I do and I just have no idea how I’ll cope next year without seeing the majority of them every day.

Half Term Hols

Hello! Yes, I am alive, despite my last post being nearly a week ago…oopsy-daisy. Anyway, I thought I would give you quick update on what’s being going on in my overthinking life lately…

  • Last Tuesday my dad returned from a two-day business trip to Cologne, bringing with him a bounty of gifts, namely a massive bar of Milka chocolate, a ‘travel size’ bag of Haribo gummy bears, and some cherry boiled sweets in a cool tin. Yum!

https://instagram.com/p/3KKAz3kQOd/?taken-by=booksteaanda_onesie

  • I broke up from school last Thursday, after an early exam day involving Maths Paper 1, Physics and English Language. The fun never stops…to make things even worse, there was a fully intact dead bird outside the science block all morning! We did, however, being on study leave, get to leave school at lunch (I felt like such a rebel) and go to get ice lollies (Rockets, to be precise) as the weather was sooo good. Add in some Hula Hoops and Haribo, and you get a very hyped-up teenager sitting her English Language exam…
  • On the Friday I went to my local county show – for those who are unfamiliar with the idea of a county show, it’s basically a massive agricultural fair thing, which has also involved to include a fairground, plenty of shopping opportunities and food stalls. I had a really nice smoothie with a discount because one of my friend’s aunt ran the stall, had an amazing wood-fired pizza (and a brilliant burger for brunch because why not) and met aforementioned friend with smoothie connections and another friend as well as seeing various people from school, which was all good fun.
  • Over the bank holiday weekend, I went with my dad (and later my sister as well) to a festival a couple of hours away, which Doctor and the Medics (think ‘Spirit In The Sky’) and Status Quo were headlining. That was seriously fun, but I’ll save all the juicy detail for the festival post sat in my drafts folder as I type…
  • After returning from said festival on Bank Holiday Monday, it was straight into the shower (there weren’t any at the campsite) and then into town after a quick lunch, to meet up for a coffee (or more accurately, a smoothie) with a primary school friend who I haven’t spoken to in person for about four years. It was arranged over Facebook (the joys of social media!) and although I was nervous it could be awkward, the conversation actually flowed for a good couple of hours, and then I walked home with her, which was nice! It was good to chat to an estranged friend again, and in person rather than over Facebook 🙂
  • Yesterday was ma biiiirttthhhdayyyyy! (woop woop, I’m a grown up now ;))

    CAKE!!! Have a slice…if there’s any left… source: YouTube, via Giphy.com

I got some really cool presents, including a mason jar glass which my dad really doesn’t get the point of (as featured on my Instagram), a guide to beating procrastination (likely to be featured on my Insta in the near future), a posh portable hangman game, chocolate!, a pair of earrings I picked out at the county show (I’m getting my ears pierced tomorrow!), a cushion and funky sign from my best friend (which I actually got the day school broke up) and a matching coaster from my parents (for all the mugs I secrete on my desk), the Pitch Perfect 2 soundtrack AND, the big one, as featured on my Instagram, a Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 instant camera in black! I love it and have already taken 6 photos (although one isn’t really developing properly)…it’s so difficult not to photograph literally everything!

  • I also reached 100 Instagram followers, so thanks to everyone who follows me over there!

https://instagram.com/p/3KYZ4VkQJR/?taken-by=booksteaanda_onesie

  • Today I met up with a couple of my jazz orchestra friends, and we went to an amaaaazing burger place, Hubbox, for lunch. Said restaurant was seriously photogenic, and the source of many of my new Polaroid-style pictures…we also went shopping, and I bought stationery for a friend’s birthday in Wilkinson’s and a bunch of clothes in New Look – a funky pink kimono-jackety-thing, a super pretty black strappy top with lacy detailing bits along the bottom and an awesome, bright Aztec-print pencil skirt. None of it (except maybe the top) is really the kind of stuff I normally wear, but I love it and thought that if I love it, surely it should be the kind of clothes I am wearing? Anyway, I managed to spend the New Look voucher I got for my birthday, some other birthday money and some of my own money, so that’s all good!
*endless heart-eyed emoji* IT'S SO PRETTY! And watching it develop is incredible...

  • Now, looking into the future…tomorrow I’m taking the plunge and getting my ears pierced (!) – I already have three pairs of earrings (aforementioned pretty flowery ones, some dangly owls my sister randomly bought me and some pretty frosted blue dangly droplets I got as a present a while ago), so I can’t wait to be able to wear them all, after the 6-week period is up! Have you got your ears pierced, or have any plans to get them done?
  • On Saturday I have another friend’s birthday party, which should be fun, and then in the evening I’m doing a 5k charity neon run (or hobble) with my dad in aid of a local cancer charity. Expect photos!

What’s been up with you lately? I’m hoping to become a bit more present in the blogging world, so look out for more posts and comments from me!

Thanks for reading 🙂

100 Days of Happiness {day 62} – Sunday Chilling

Oops. I can’t remember a lot about Sunday, it was so long ago! I remember I visited my gran and uncle with my parents whilst my sister was doing homework, and I wore my Montreux Jazz Festival 2014 performer T-shirt. Great memories, huh?

Oh yeah, mum wasn’t feeling great so we had Dominos. Yes! Haven’t had Dominos for ages, and it’s always good just to refresh my tastebuds 😉

Ciao!

Ugh so cringeworthy why have I gone all internatio suddenly with absolutely no logic???

Anyway…

M&M and Nutella Brownies!

As tomorrow I’m going to my first every music festival (!), UK Live, the friend I’m going with has come over for the weekend. 🙂

As one of the most important things life is chocolate, and my friend is an awesome baker, we made some brownies! But these were brownies with a twist… m&ms and nutella!

I don’t know how they will turn out, but the mixture tasted good…

What’s your favourite baking project?
