Music of the Month: July

MUSIC OF THE MONTH (4)

I’m back! I’m back! I’m back! (*mentally sings Back For Good*)

In true ‘me’ style, I’m now just going to gloss over my month’s worth of absence (in my defence I was in Cornwall, then Holland, then Scotland, then Exmouth…and yes, I promise to post about them soon, I was just too lazy to get all the photos together tonight) and throw a months worth of my favourite music at you…

False Alarm – Matoma feat. Becky Hill

Vessel (deluxe edition) – twenty one pilots (specifically Lovely, House of Gold, Ode To Sleep and Forest)

Tilted – Christine and the Queens

Capsize – FRENSHIP feat. Emily Warren

City Bird – Bud feat. Origin One

Over And Done With – The Proclaimers (I highly recommend the film of Sunshine on Leith, fyi)

Alarm – Anne-Marie (why oh why has my brain forever tainted songs entitled ‘alarm’ with associations of Nicki Minaj and Pound The Alarm)

Step Into The Light – Teminite feat. Jonah Hitchens (the sax solo on this is just too good and this song is one of my current go-to pick-me-ups, I love it so much <3)

Cold Water – Major Lazer feat. Justin Bieber and MØ

Addicted Love, I Wish & Make It Funky – Maceo Parker

Wake Me Up – Dirty Loops

Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) – Buddy Rich

Dancing On My Own – Calum Scott (this makes me tearful basically every time but I love it)

One Dance/Hasta el Amanecer – Alex Aiono (bonus points for the flawless Spanish accent) (also his cover of Kent Jones’ Don’t Mind)

Fake It – Bastille

How Would You Like It – Lauren Aquilina

Perfect Strangers – Jonas Blue feat. JP Cooper

XO – Eden Project

Lost Boy/Talk Me Down/For Him – Troye Sivan

And that is my grand return to blogging in a couple of paragraphs and thirty songs. Hopefully it won’t be so long until my next post!

Music of the Month: June

MUSIC OF THE MONTH (3)

OK so the title may lie a bit…this is kinda my favourite songs from June but also a load of stuff from the whole four days of July we’ve had so far, but it’s been so long since I’ve done one of these (/blogged at all, shh) that I thought I’d stick them in anyway. okeydokes, here you go…

You Haunt Me – Sir Sly

This whole album is so good, but my *absolute favourites* have to be Where I’m Going, Ghost, Gold, Helpless/Bloodlines Pt. II – Medley and Too Far Gone. They’re all just so good and relaxing and great though, kinda twenty one pilots-esque, so mega creds to my boyfriend for introducing me to them because they’re now one of my current favourite bands.

We Don’t Talk Anymore – Charlie Puth feat. Selena Gomez

I wouldn’t call either of these artists I especially like, they’re alright but that’s it, but I surprisingly like this song – it sticks in my head and ahh I just really like it. It’s kinda relaxed and chilled and I like it.

Final Song – MØ

If It Ain’t Love – Jason Derulo

Quick heads up: this song is SO. GOOD. for running to, as is Light It Up by Major Lazer feat. Nyla.

Middle – DJ Snake

Hotter Than Hell – Dua Lipa

Give Me Your Love – Sigala feat. John Newman and Nile Rodgers

Buyo and Best Things – Lucky Chops

WILD – Troye Sivan feat. Alessia Cara

This is also co-written by Alessia and she’s basically one of my favourite singers and songwriters ever so yeah, I was pretty much guaranteed to love this.

Are We Ready? (Wreck) – Two Door Cinema Club

Just Like Fire – Pink

This Girl – Kungs vs. Cookin’ On Three Burners (how did they come up with that name?!?)

i hate u, i love u – gnash feat. Olivia O’Brien

Cut To Black – Lemaitre

The Temple EP – Parson James

Take It Back – Ed Sheeran

The chorus of this is really catchy and I just love all of Ed Sheeran’s lyrics tbh.

Know-It-All (Deluxe) – Alessia Cara

I think I might know the words to every song on this album, I love it so much. The songs and the songwriting and everything are just too perfect for words.

Moanin’ – Mingus Big Band

I feel like I might be approximately twenty years late to the party but OH MY THIS IS GOOD. ESPECIALLY THE BARI SAX RIFF AT THE START. *faints and dies*

Groovin’ Hard – Buddy Rich

This is one of my absolute favourite pieces to play on trumpet, and listening to it isn’t half bad either.

Heathens – Twenty One Pilots

Good Grief – Bastille

uh, does this even need an explanation?! At a party last weekend, a Bastille song came on and my friend, who was, uh, fairly drunk, came up to me like “OOH this is Bastille” “yeeeesss…” “you LOVE Bastille” “yes, I do”. Either her ability to recall this is because she’s a really great friend or, much more likely, I occasionally may have let my fangirling get a *little* bit out of control…

Send My Love (To Your New Lover) – Adele (+ most of 25 really)

Gold – Kiiara

Sit Still, Look Pretty – Daya

Say It (feat. Tove Lo)/Never Be Like You (feat. Kai) – Flume

I Remember – AlunaGeorge

I Wanna Know – Alesso feat. Nico & Vinz

The Scientist – Coldplay

aaanddd I’m going to stop there before I add anything else…why am I so incapable of making short playlists?!?

What are your thoughts on my picks? What music have you been especially loving lately?

20 Songs You Need To Listen To Right Now

photo-1421757350652-9f65a35effc7

I’m feeling quite stressed out right now (sneaky twenty one pilots reference fully intended). I’m now on study leave and fully into exam season for the next month and a week exactly (then FREEDOM aka work experience, jazz concert and prom), and today I had my first exam since English Language a few weeks back, biology paper 1. Yippee.

Anyway, long story short I’m feeling stressed and a bit freaked and just kinda trying to forget I have a truckload of exams headed my way over the next few weeks and I thought the best way to do this, whilst also compensating for no April music round up, would be to make a list of my top twenty favourite songs at the moment. So, here you are…(AGH MY BRAIN’S SO FRIED I JUST WROTE HEAR. AND YESTERDAY I CALLED A CUT AN INJURY HOLE. I am just so done)

Right, back on topic. Read this post, stick in some headphones and listen to some of these fab songs and then tell me what you think or give me some ~even better~ songs to listen to.

1. This Is What You Came For // Calvin Harris feat. Rihanna

This song ❤ it feels more old-style Rihanna, pre-Work and all the stuff she’s doing with Drake, and tbh I think it’s way better. Plus Calvin Harris, yay.

2. No Money // Galantis

This song’s just summery and makes me smile and will always remind me of singing it in the car with my best friend when we drove up to London to see Kygo a few weeks ago.

3. Cheap Thrills // Sia feat. Sean Paul

I wasn’t sure about this song at first but now I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT. Even the video, which is a little random/odd, is growing on me.

4. Hair // Little Mix feat. Sean Paul

This song just makes me smile and kinda helps me keep my sanity when it feels like revision has sucked everything except the Spanish word for ‘town hall’ (ayuntamiento – it’s an Edexcel favourite), the life cycle of a mosquito (gametocyte sporozoite merozoite schizont kill me now), the carbon cycle, the exact value for sine of 60 (0.5)(omg I remembered that maybe I won’t fail further maths), the structure of a flower and maybe a few other bits and bobs out of my brain.

5. Don’t Let Me Down // The Chainsmokers feat. Daya

THIS SONG IS INCREDIBLE. And I’m not the only one who thinks so because, gratifyingly, I got one of my music friends to listen to it and he immediately was like OMG THAT’S SO GOOD so yeah you should listen to it.

6. Raging // Kygo feat. Kodaline

This has been in my head ever since I heard it live but ahhh it’s so good that really isn’t an issue.

7. Waiting Game // Parson James

You might recognise the name Parson James from Stole The Show by Kygo, but his solo stuff is seriously good too. This song has kinda Sam Smith-esque bits to it, and I JUST LOVE IT OK.

8. Slow Dance With The Devil // Parson James

OK so just go listen to his whole Temple EP. But if you’ll only listen to one song, make it this one. But really you should just listen to the whole thing. You won’t regret it.

9. Once In A While // Timeflies

This popped up as a suggested song on Spotify and all I can say is, nice work Spotify algorithms.

10. Fiction // Kygo feat. Tom Odell

The intro to this is just <3. And the rest of it too, tbh.

11. Intro // Kygo

This is the first track off his newly released debut album, Cloud Nine, and while it’s not much of a song in itself, it’s lowkey relaxing with some nice piano stuff in there and it’s a good addition to any instrumental study playlist.

12. Cut To Black // Lemaitre

Although this has a fairly emo name and the video features what I think might be a burning swimming pool, the song itself is just summery and happy and great. The piano intro especially just instantly lifts my spirits.

13. Hell Of A Girl // Grace

This song is just like yay happy strong power motivation yes it’s good.

14. Kicks {Tobtok Remix} // Lauren Aquilina

I didn’t really like this remix at first, and I still think the middle is the best bit, but it’s definitely worth a listen.

15. Up&Up // Coldplay

I just really like this, as with most of the stuff they’ve released as singles from A Head Full Of Dreams so far.

16. Can’t Stop The Feeling // Justin Timberlake

This is more cheesy than a four cheese pizza and, as my friend put it, “the kind of song you’d hear at the end of a film as the credits roll” (which is probably exactly what they were aiming from, as it’s from the new Dreamworks film Trolls), but it’s a damn good song to sing along loudly/stress relief embarrassingly dance to and is just so happyyyy.

17. Write On Me // Fifth Harmony

This song was produced by Kygo, and yeah, it’s summery and I like it.

18. Idfc // Blackbear

I indirectly discovered this song through a friend and yeah, it’s not exactly summery or upbeat, but it’s quite a good song to listen to when you need a bit of catharsis or are just feeling really wound up or annoyed or stressed out.

19. Surprise Yourself // Jack Garratt

Jack Garratt yasss ❤

20. What If I Go? // Mura Masa

THIS SONG IS SO GOOD AND I LOVE IT even if I do think the vocals sound really like Rita Ora.

Thoughts on these songs? Let me know if you like them (Eve can vouch for how much fun impromptu fangirling with me can be) and if you have any recommendations, let me know in the comments or email or tell me in person if you know me or something and I promise to trawl through and listen to every single one of them 🙂

The Best Night Of My Life: Kygo @ Brixton O2 Academy

An A-Z Of My Music Library {the 2016 edition}

{featured image via Unsplash}

An A-Z Of My Music Library {the 2016 edition}

As, well, probably very few of you remember, maybe a year ago I did an A-Z of my music library. As you’ve probably (hopefully…) guessed, I’ve decided to have another go, and do an updated 2016 version. Because, well, it’s 2016, and I only recently stopped using Spotify Premium and all my music got screwed up when I got my new phone, this is actually from my Spotify library. Anyhow, without further ado…

A // Best: Ain’t Got Far To Go – Jess Glynne or Adore – Jasmine Thompson (yes, I am incapable of sticking to only one song)

       Worst: All Fired Up – The Saturdays. When I was younger I really liked The Saturdays but now I can just take them or leave them, really.

B // Best: Bloodsport – Raleigh Ritchie or Banana Pancakes – Jack Johnson. Both of these songs just kinda calm me down and help me relax for some reason, plus Banana Pancakes is just full of spring-summer relaxed kinda vibes.

        Worst: Bomfalleralla – Afasi & Filthy. I chose this purely because I don’t actually know what it is, I only have it saved because it was on the The Fault In Our Stars soundtrack. There are a couple of other songs I have saved just because they were on an album, but yeah, I chose this one.

C // Best: Coco (Live) – Lucky Chops. I’m listening to a full Lucky Chops set on YouTube at the moment and omg I just don’t know how I survived without them. Honestly, just the first few bars of one of their songs helps me to smile, breathe more deeply and generally calm down whenever I’m stressed or upset. I could happily spend my whole life listening to them, I love them so much.

        Worst: Dear Future Husband – Meghan Trainor. On the one hand, this song is vaguely catchy; on the other hand, the lyrics are just like what?! Really not helping anything to do with feminism, Meghan *eye roll*

D // Best: Don’t Worry (ft. Ray Dalton) – Madcon. This song just makes me think of exercise and running and stress relief. and that kinda feels like a good thing. Alternatively, I also love Do It Now by Jasmine Thompson and Daniel In The Den by Bastille is kinda the song that I always end up going back to at some point or another.

        Worst: Don’t You Worry Child (ft. Shweta Subram) – The Piano Guys

E // Best: Echoes {Edeema Remix} – Lauren Aquilina. I love Lauren Aquilina and because of her I discovered Edeema and yeah, basically a match made in heaven. This song is amazing.

        Worst: Ex’s & Oh’s – Elle King. I originally really liked this but then I think I heard it on the radio too much and it just got to the point where I hear it and go eugh. Hopefully, eventually I’ll recover and I can like it again :). Another candidate for worst was Everybody Hurts by Paul Anka, just because although I love his ‘Rock Swings’ version of Jump, I don’t think I’ve actually listened to this.

F // Best: Fast Car – Jonas Blue feat. Dakota. This is just the ultimate summer song. Another possibility is I Feel Good/Funkytown by Lucky Chops, except I’ve already waxed lyrical about them, or Fragile by Kygo feat. Labrinth (I’ve got endless heart eyes for that song).

        Worst: Oooohhh this is hard…this feels like treason, but narrowing it down to songs I actually know, maybe Firestone by Kygo? Don’t get me wrong, I like the song and I love Kygo (LESS THAN TWO WEEKS TILL I SEE HIM LIVE) but I never really got the appeal of Firestone – maybe it got too overplayed?

G // Best: Ghost – Halsey (I’ve seriously neglected this song, I need to listen to it way more often) / Games Continued – Bakermat (+the album art for this is so pretty)/

       Worst: Gravity {Acoustic Version} – DJ Fresh feat. Ella Eyre. As much as I love Ella, I just don’t think this song packs quite the same punch or works as well acoustically.

H // Best: SO MANY POSSIBILITIES. Here – Alessia Cara, Hello – Lucky Chops, Heavydirtysoul or House of Gold – Twenty One Pilots, Home – Ella Eyre, Hard Time – Seinabo Sey and Happy Home {Sam Feldt Remix} – Hedegaard/Lukas Graham are all such good candidates I can’t even choose.

        Worst: Home – Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. Yeah, I used to love this song but now I just always find myself skipping it. Maybe I need to try listening to it the whole way through, or maybe my music tastes have just changed dramatically.

I // Best: I’m A Mess – Ed Sheeran (THAT WAS SO HARD TO CHOOSE JUST ONE YOU HAVE NO IDEA)

        Worst: In The Bath – Lemon Jelly. THIS SONG IS JUST SO WEIRD WHY DID I EVER SAVE IT?!

J // Best: Jubel – Klingande, or Jump – Paul Anka, purely for the 2015 Serbian jazz festival memories.

        Worst: Umumum Just The Way You Are – Billy Joel. This is saved because I’m doing a mini soloeyish bit in jazz orchestra and I don’t mind it but, well, I don’t love it and it can be easily overplayed.

K // Best: King – Lauren Aquilina (the lyrics to this are just so freakin’ good) or Kiss Me – Campsite Dream.

        Worst: Kids – MGMT. I chose this just because I only had about five songs starting with K and I know this is a song that I have to hear to recognise.

L // Best: Love Is Blind – Lapsley, Love Yourself – Justin Bieber, Low – Lauren Aquilina (again, LYRICS)

        Worst: Let It Whip – The Treblemakers {from the Pitch Perfect soundtrack}. This was always one of my least favourite PP songs.

M // Best: Moments – Freddy Verano feat. Sam Smith, Mozart’s House – Clean Bandit feat. Love Ssega, My Girl – Lucky Chops (can someone just take me to see them live already?!), My Song – Alessia Cara.

        Worst: Midnight – Coldplay {Kygo Remix}. Just not really loving the original tbh, and even Kygo can’t make it better.

N// Best: No Strings – Chloe Howl, Nina – Ed Sheeran, Never Forget You – MNEK, (New Americana – Halsey?!), Nobody Does It Better – Michael Calfan

        Worst: Notorious – The Saturdays.

O // Best: One Day (Vandaag) – Bakermat, Out Of Our Depth – Lauren Aquilina

        Worst: Ocean Drive – Duke Dumont, Oceans – Coldplay

P // Best: Pompeii, Poet – Bastille, Problem – Lucky Chops, Past Lives – Borns

        Worst: Photograph {Jack Garratt Remix} – Ed Sheeran

Q // Best: Quarter Master – Snarky Puppy

        Worst: Quarter Master – Snarky Puppy. This is the only song I have for Q so by default, it is both the best and the worst.

R // Best: Raging – Kygo (feat. Kodaline) (I am SO ready for his album), Runaway – Ed Sheeran, Running Out – Matoma

        Worst: Release The Hounds – Centrefolds

S // Best: Scars To Your Beautiful – Alessia Cara. This is one of my absolute favourite songs at the moment. Also: Seeing Stars – Borns, Seventeen – Alessia Cara, Shine – Benjamin Francis Leftwich {Kygo Remix}, Sinners – Lauren Aquilina, Something For Nothing – Rationale, Southern Man – Akshin Alizadeh, Spare Time – Tides, Stole The Show – Kygo, Sun Goes Down – Jasmine Thompson, Superstition – Stevie Wonder. Aka half the songs I have  beginning with S. Ah well.

        Worst: Somebody To You – The Vamps

T // Best: Take It Back – Ed Sheeran, Take On Me – a-Ha {Kygo Remix}, Tenerife Sea – Ed Sheeran, Things We Lost In The Fire/These Streets – Bastille, Thinking Of Sunshine – Daniel Adams Ray, Time To Say Goodbye – Lauren Aquilina

        Worst: Tell Her – Rizzle Kicks

U // Best: U Got The Power – Swiss Lips {Bastille Remix}, Ugly Truth – Lauren Aquilina, Unsteady – X Ambassadors

        Worst: Under The Table – Banks, purely because I don’t know it.

V // Best: Viva La Vida – Coldplay. Because you can’t beat some classic Coldplay.

        Worst: Also, it’s the only song I have beginning with V so…Viva La Vida, Coldplay.

W // Best: What Would You Do – Bastille, When We Were Young – Adele, Wild Things – Alessia Cara, Worry – Jack Garratt, Where Is The Love – The Black Eyed Peas

        Worst: What You’re Proposing – Status Quo {Aquostic} (Sorry, dad…)

Y // Best: Younger {Kygo Remix} – Seinabo Sey, Youth – Troye Sivan

        Worst: You Should Know Where I’m Coming From – Banks. I feel like Banks is getting a lot of hate in this post, but I swear it’s because I only really know a few of her songs and don’t have any other options!

Z // Best: Zombie – Jamie T

        Worst: Zoot Suit Riot – Cherry Poppin’ Daddies (I literally only have two songs beginning with Z and I don’t love either so it’s a toss up between the two really)

Stuff That Doesn’t Begin With  A Letter // Best: 10,000 Emerald Pools – Borns/(I Just) Died In Your Arms – Bastille

Worst: 30 Days – The Saturdays, “Nessun dorma!” – Luciano Pavarotti (no, I don’t know why it has quote marks around it either, and I only saved it because it was the piece I did for my GCSE ensemble performance, eugh)

I think that from that I’ve discovered that a) I have some really, really weird/awful stuff saved to my music library, b) I really like Ed Sheeran and Alessia Cara and c) LUCKY CHOPS ARE SO DAMN GOOD I THINK I’M ADDICTED AND I WANT TO TELL EVERYBODY ABOUT THEM SO GO LISTEN TO THEM NOW. Ahem. So, err, yeah. That’s about it.

(I MEAN IT, GO LISTEN TO LUCKY CHOPS RIGHT NOW. EVEN IF YOU’VE BASICALLY RUN OUT OF DATA AND YOUTUBE WILL USE IT ALL UP, LUCKY CHOPS ARE WORTH IT)(probably)

Music of the Month: March

My Sister’s Keeper: Thoughts & Playlist

Music of the Month: March

MUSIC OF THE MONTH (1)

Woop, third (consecutive) month of a feature! That’s got to be some kind of record for me…anyhow, here’s my favourite music of this month. It’s been a bit disrupted because my Spotify Premium subscription ended halfway through the month (:() but hopefully there’s a decent mix in there! Enjoy 🙂

[hear the playlist on Spotify here]

Fragile – Kygo & Labrinth

Raging – Kygo & Kodaline {I am so, so, so ready for Kygo’s Cloud Nine album)

House of Gold – twenty one pilots {Elly got very excited when she saw this was on my playlist}

Pillowtalk – ZAYN {I got this on the Now 93 album and it’s definitely grown on me}

Hymn for the Weekend – Coldplay

In Ibiza (SeeB Remix) // Mike Posner

Fast Car // Jonas Blue feat. Dakota

Stevie Knows // Olly Murs {okay so normally Olly Murs just irritates me a bit but for some reason (I personally think it’s the line “Stevie don’t wonder, Stevie knows”. A good pun always gets me) I actually quite like this song. *shrugs*}

If You Ever Want To Be In Love // James Bay {I’d heard this on the radio a few times without knowing what it was and just mildly thinking it was alright, but now that I know what song it actually is I really like it!}

Bang My Head // David Guetta feat. Sia {I always listen to this song when I’m doing exercise, so now I think I’ve got some kinda autoresponse to it – whenever I hear it I instinctively want to start running or stretching or something!}

Stay // Kygo feat. Maty Noyes {this song isn’t new to me, but I’ve kinda rediscovered it and have been listening to it  a lot this month}

Something Good // MOUNT & Nicolas Haelg

Roses //  The Chainsmokers feat. ROZES {about halfway through March one of my friends was like “what how have you not heard this” (I kinda quit the radio whilst I had Spotify Premium) but then I bought Now 93 and omg I love it)

Faded – Alan Walker

Me, Myself & I //  G – Eazy x Bebe Rexha

Dessert (Remix) // Dawin feat. Silentó {this is kinda really weird but has also kinda really grown on me}

I’m In Control // AlunaGeorge feat. PopCaan

Basically the entire x album // Ed Sheeran {as is probably obvious from my My Sister’s Keeper playlist (which JODI PICOULT HERSELF likes) and the profusion of Ed Sheeran on that, I’ve listened to a lot of his music this month. I’m not normally a big person for listening to full albums, but I’ve listened to the whole way through multiple times this month, and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon}

1989 // Taylor Swift {pretty much ditto with the listening to the whole album thing, but not quite as obsessively} [the Ryan Adams version of this is on the Spotify playlist]

It’s On Again // Alicia Keys feat. Kendrick Lamar {as with Stay, this song isn’t new to me but I’ve especially started listening to it whilst running, which it’s really good for}

Avalanche // WALK THE MOON {I bought WTM’s whole album on sale a few months ago but this is one of the only songs I’ve really listened to, and I LOVE IT}

Superstition // Stevie Wonder {because let’s be honest, who can beat Stevie Wonder?!}

Moments //  Freddy Verano (feat. Sam Smith) {THIS HAS SAM SMITH ON. AND IT’S HAPPY. WHAT IS GOING ON.}

Stay With Me // Sam Smith {same story as Stay}

How Will I Know // Sam Smith {I heard this on YouTube as a live session ages ago and I even think I’ve featured it on here at some point, but it was only recently that I realised it was actually available on Spotify on the Drowning Shadows edition of his album}

Something For Nothing // Rationale {THIS IS SO GOOD, GO LISTEN TO IT ASAP. I NOW UNDERSTAND ALL THE HYPE AROUND RATIONALE}

Running Out // Matoma {I got a bit obsessed with Matoma this month}

Nobody Does It Better // Michael Calfan {maybe my favourite new discovery from March, this is brilliant}

Atlas Hands (Thomas Jack Remix) // Benjamin Francis Leftwich

Coming Over – filous Remix // James Hersey

Jubel // Klingande {same story as Nobody Does It Better}

Love Like That (Edeema Remix) // Sophie Elise {literally all of Edeema’s remixes are incredible}

Shine – Matoma Remix // Felix Jaehn

Kiss Me // Campsite Dream {major throwback to when I was like ten. I just remember this song from when I was younger for some reason and this version of it is brilliant}

Halycon Birds // Broken Back {despite the depressing artist name, this song is actually really bright and summery}

Adore // Jasmine Thompson

Ain’t Got Far To Go // Jasmine Thompson

Say You Do // Sigala

Heavydirtysoul // twenty one pilots

Catch & Release – Deepend Remix // Matt Simons

Games Continued // Bakermat

Love Is Blind // Lapsley {I honestly hated this song the first time I heard it but I absolutely love it now}

If I Were Sorry // Frans {this is the song that, whenever I have an argument or someone or I’m annoyed with someone, I want to aggressively send them the YouTube link to}

Rivers – Sam Feldt & De Hofnar Remix // Thomas Jack

Thinking Of Sunshine // Daniel Adams-Ray

Be As You Are – JordanXL Remix // Mike Posner

Stressed Out // twenty one pilots

I Just Called To Say I Love You // Stevie Wonder

Scars To Your Beautiful // Alessia Cara {somehow I missed that her album was out and omg I love all her music but I especially feel like I could write a whole freakin essay about how brilliant this song is because the lyrics are so good and body positive and it’s so catchy and ugh it’s just incredible}

Cheap Thrills // Sia (feat. Sean Paul) {this took a few listens to grow on me, but now I officially love it!}

10 Things That Made Me Happy {week one}

TEN THINGS THAT MADE ME HAPPY

Hello!

So I’ve decided to start a new series on here…at least, new for me – I doubt I’m the first blogger to do this, but oh well! My plan is to share every Sunday, instead of a weekly wrap-up which I often don’t enjoy writing or forget/can’t be bothered to do, 10 things that made me happy that week.

The more switched-on of you may have noticed that it’s Monday today. Oops. I only thought of doing this about half an hour ago but didn’t want to wait till next Sunday, so I figured I’d start on the wrong day and continue from here!

Anyway, here are ten things that made me happy last week…

I *am* planning on doing a January wrap up, but there’s been so much good music I love this month that I had to do a separate post for it all. #sorrynotsorry. Anyway. Here goes.

Happiness Is…

This post is pretty much just a part II to this one about little things that make me happy…it was semi-inspired by this Facebook page, so go check it out 🙂

  • When you see your friend for the first time in weeks and she runs up to you and gives you a massive bear hug
  • Finding out you’ve had a pay rise without realising
  • Getting your first ever tip (woop)
  • Hysterical laughing fits (I’ve had a lot of these lately)
  • Being mistaken for older than you are (this has happened to me twice in the last day or so 😊)
  • When the trumpets have an awesome phrase in unison and we just nail it and that feeling is incredible
  • Discovering mutual friends
  • Creepy snapchat exchanges with one of your best friends
  • Praline chocolate penguins ❤ ❤ ❤
  • A football match with a really awesome atmosphere
  • Talking to new people at work and getting to know them
  • Finding a song you can play on repeat for ages without getting tired of it
  • Finding someone to fangirl with
  • Rediscovering a song/artist you’d forgotten how much you love
    (+ a zillion other Bastille songs for obvious reasons)
  • When your sarcasm is just on point
    giphy (10)

    Probably you lot right now ~via~

  • Finding a new blog/Instagram feed and just loving everything on it
  • Getting a recommendation for something from a friend that is just absolutely spot on
  • Pretty typography of a quote you really love

  • Finding a blog post that boosts your spirits or gives you confidence when you need it most
  • Spontaneous jam sessions where everything just sounds groovyyyy (I can’t believe I just used that word I’m sorry)
  • Long text talks with close friends about anything and everything
  • Random phone chats with friends because you just felt like talking to them
  • Being surprised by how well you did on a test
  • Talking to people you haven’t spoken to in ages
  • Meeting up with your primary school best friend for the first time in about four years and accidentally talking for over an hour
  • Having a best friend that you can (and do) tell anything and everything to
  • Getting to know someone you’ve known for years but never really spoken to
  • A lesson you’re dreading turning out OK
  • Reading a book and being almost physically incapable of putting it down (AHEM Rainbow Rowell Patrick Ness (spoilers for The Knife of Never Letting Go in the latter) MENTIONING NO NAMES)
  • This sounds weird, but loving a song so much that listening to it feels like coming home
  • Finding something awesome tucked away in a corner of the internet (often, these are blogs)
  • It sounds stupid but when a blog post or Instagram photo or something gets loads of likes/views/comments really quickly
  • When you take a damn good photo, if I do say so myself
  • My favourite food ❤ (CHEESE AND SPINACH PENNE BAKE FOR LIFE)
  • Getting a random awesome blog post idea
  • Seeing family you haven’t seen in a while (like two years, in some cases)
  • When the perfect song comes on Spotify on shuffle
  • Reading back a blog post and thinking, “Damn, I’m proud of that one

What small things can brighten up your day?

A Few of My Favourite Things (#2)

As I mentioned in my weekly wrap up yesterday, I’ve got a favourites post for you today! Now I’m not gonna lie, this post was fairly heavily influenced by what I could fit into a pretty flat lay for Instagram (hasn’t been posted yet, but you lovely blog readers get a sneak peek), but not to worry, I’ll be adding in a few extra bits and pieces too…

Aforementioned Instagram-ready flatlay

Aforementioned Instagram-ready flat lay

As shown in the photo:

  • Checked shirts. I’ve got two fairly similar ones, one thin and one thick and lately I’ve been wearing a lot of the thicker one (thin one is pictured) – it goes brilliantly with leggings or skinny jeans and a big, cosy woolly snood (NOT scarf! ;)), and depending on the weather, is often enough for a quick trip to the shop without having to bother with a hoodie or coat.
  • Fox notebook. I bought this in Cornwall while on holiday over the summer (from Newquay, to be precise) and I LOVE it. I don’t use notebooks that much (though I’ve certainly got enough of them…) but I just love the yellow, ruled pages of  this one and am using it for noting down a lot of blog-related stuff – post ideas, favourite blogs – and a few Nanowrimo thoughts. I’m even tending to use my fountain pen with it, I love it that much!
  • My Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 camera (though technically it’s the photos shown in the pic). I took a break from using this for a while since the summer holidays, but I picked it up again the other day to snap the product of my procrastination – a fairy light photo string. It came out really well, which has got me back into it. My sister also bought me a photo album specifically for that size photo, which I’m looking forward to starting to fill up!
  • The Fault In Our Stars. I actually reread this a couple of weeks ago and although I’ve already read it, OH THE FEELS. A true masterpiece by John Green. (Check out my film/book review from the first time round here)
  • Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares (David Levithan & Rachel Cohn). I blame this book 100% (and maybe also all the fairy lights currently up in my room) for how Christmassy I’m feeling. And also the fact that I REALLY WANT TO GO TO NYC AND FIND ALL THE PLACES MENTIONED IN THIS BOOK (don’t think I can pin that one on the fairy lights).
  • Paperchase postcards. This isn’t the first one of these, but after they were mentioned in a post by Hannah Gale, I took the opportunity when I was in town later that day and stocked up on a couple more, including this one.
  • Guylian chocolates. This box is actually empty, I’m afraid. My sister brought them back from American duty free, and I love them so a box of six was never going to last long!
  • Finally – this Michael Honnor print. I mentioned his exhibition that I went to in my wrap up yesterday, and this was my favourite print – I liked it so much I bought a card of it! The blues are just so vivid, varied and realistic…I think I’m in love with it.

And not pictured:

  • These H&M boots. Strictly speaking, I got these last Sunday, but whatever. I’m wearing them a lot at the moment (so long as it isn’t raining!) and I can see them working with jeans, skirts, or dresses. Yay! {photo via H&M}
  • Flat lays, flat lays, flat lays to infinity. I’ve seen tons of these on Instagram and on Hannah Gale’s previously linked blog, but never knew their proper name until this week. Now I know it, I’ve been able to use Google to find some tips – my favourite article was this one from Ling @ Ling Out Loud. Here’s one of my attempts…

  • And…that’s all I can think of right now! What have you been liking this week? Have you got any pro tips for flat lays?
