Whilst pondering the key to understanding my physics homework (and simultaneously suspecting that I was getting into way too much detail about calculating the latent heat of vaporization of water), my mind turned to what I could write in my first (proper) blog post. I’m a big fan of music-my friend and I regularly run into the classroom in the morning, babbling non-stop about the latest band we’ve discovered. I have been known to become obsessed with an amazing (but slightly depressing) singer/songwriter, and force my previously bubbly and happy friends to listen to their music until they have sunk into a state of deep depression (the latest example being Lauren Aquilina – check out her Facebook page)! My current favourite band, and indeed the only one whose album I have listened to every single track several times over, is Bastille.
As I was contemplating my (arguably slightly creepy) obsession with them (hey, anything’s better than physics homework!), I came up with the idea of creating a story from a selection of lyrics from my Top 25 Most Played Tracks from my iPod/phone. As I actually looked to see what these tracks were, I realised that my friends’ persistent hijacking of my phone and music player in particular had slightly skewed the results. The final list of tracks is, therefore,a mix of my current favourites and my official Top 25.
On a side note, I feel that although the final result is more than a little random and nonsensical, it also illustrates the fact that as many adults appear to believe, not all modern pop music consists of rubbish, repetitive lyrics some of it certainly does, but some tracks have very truthful and insightful messages, if you have the open ears to receive them with.I doubt it will be the most amazing work of literature, but here you go: a 306 word story/dialogue, entirely made from song lyrics. (A quick note: in my mind, the dialogue is between two close friends in their mid to late 30s, one of whom is sensible, with a settled life and the belief that the chance for them to seize their dreams has gone, and the other who is a little crazy, and has more than the faintest notion that they want to be a rock star. Feel free to interpret it in your own way-let me know in the comments what you thought of it!)

Walking down the street,“I had a dream so big and loud. I jumped so high I touched the clouds,” she said. “Lately I’ve been, I’ve been losing sleep,”, I said. “Look, there’s a girl in the treetop looking at the stars.” “It’s harder than you think, telling dreams from one another,” you talk.
“I see this life, like a swinging vine.” I howled at the moon.I caught you staring at me. “Irish and proud,” I sing.
“You could never buy this girl,” you close your eyes.
“I GOT POWER, FEEL SO ROYAL,”I gotta say.
“you’re going to sing the words wrong…”
“I FEEL LIKE A ROOM WITHOUT A ROOF!”
“you’re mad,mad, mad!”
“I’M RADIOACTIVE, RADIOACTIVE!”
Asking after me, “do you think it’s funny when I’m mad, mad, mad?”
“They will come for you. You’re mad. I feel it in my bones. ”
I got a lump in my throat. “It might seem crazy, but I just get happy.” With a whisper, “it’s my new addiction.
“We’re getting the funniest looks!” you told me. “I know no one told you life was gonna be this way, and it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month or even your year, but you must have the words in that head of yours!”
“I’m irrelevant! You’ll be fine without me!” I sing. “I just wanna be a rock star!”
“We’re all getting older, wishing we were young, but you’ve hit a wall.”
“What’s the use in talking? I rather make a song they could play on the radio, that makes you wanna dance-I’m a soul man!”
You get what you want, but not what you need. One way or another, this is how the summer ends.”
“You’ll never know quite how long of time is left for you. No limits, I’m never gonna look back. With all the possibilities, this is gonna be the best day of my life”.
